Owl, snakes and spiders at Pasir Ris Mangrove Boardwalk

It was a great trip with the Naked Hermit Crabs at Pasir Ris Mangrove Boardwalk. After a long break from Pasir Ris, the guided decided to conduct a free guided walk during this September school holidays. Despite a small group everyone saw amazing animals in this short 1 hour walk.

Located with a short walk for Pasir Ris Park Carpark C is a patch of replanted mangrove that has flourished along the banks of Sungei Tampines, and even on the coastline near the river mouth.

The visitors were looking forward to spotting animals as they entered the nearest entrance to the mangrove boardwalk. Little did they know that an golden orb spider is looming just above their parents' head.

Running allowed at Chek Jawa?

While waiting for the monthly Naked Hermit Crabs guided walk to begin at Chek Jawa's information kiosk, some of us noticed runners donned in lime green t-shirts running into Chek Jawa Wetlands. They turned into the steep down sloped gravel terrain, which leads them towards the Tg Chek Jawa Muslim Cemetery and the back mangrove.

Running down the gravel slope.

Anniversary walk at Chek Jawa

Today marks a special milestone for the Naked Hermit Crabs. The volunteer group is celebrating 6 years of guided walk at Chek Jawa! I may not be a 6 years old nature guide with them but I'm glad to be part of this "celebration" right here at Chek Jawa.

Shield bugs, and Monkey and Wild Boar business at Chek Jawa

After a busy series of biodiversity event happening around Singapore in June and July, I am back guiding with the Naked Hermit Crabs at Chek Jawa for the month of August.

As usual, the wild boar troop graciously welcome visitors to Chek Jawa.
Wild boar piglets have grown so big.
Wow! The wild boar piglets have grown so big. I still fondly remember them small and cute with watermelon stripes on their body.

Another great day at Chek Jawa with the Naked Hermit Crabs

It is the first Saturday of the month again. The Naked Hermit Crab had another great guided walk with our visitors at Chek Jawa this morning. Despite the hot and humid weather our visitors sure had fun and enjoyed themselves looking the critters of Chek Jawa. We had a great turnout of about 80 visitors, with some joining the walk on the spot.

As usual, a group photo of our visitors before the walk.

Celebrating Earth Day with the Naked Hermit Crabs at Pasir Ris mangrove boardwalk with Buffy fish owl and Hornbill

Last weekend, Singapore's nature community was buzzing with activities to celebrate Earth Day. This year Earth Day falls on the 22nd April 2013, which is a Monday.

The Naked Hermit Crabs did not forget about celebration Earth Day too. We held a free public guided walk at Pasir Ris Park mangrove boardwalk for 15 visitors. We saw many interesting things we usually did not get to spot thanks to other kind park users.

A very special find for both the guides and the visitor was the Buffy fish owl. It was the first time seeing the owl for many of us, including me. Thanks to Ivan's friend, Ho Yong Tze, for showing it to us.

Crab eating macaques during Chek Jawa guided walk

For the first time I get to meet Mr Crab Eating Macaque up close at Chek Jawa today, at the monthly Naked Hermit Crabs free guided walk.

Waking up to a grey sky in the morning and with NEA's weather animation showing massive storm clouds passing by the southern parts of Singapore all the way to Batam, it was a relieve that we will not be hit by heavy rain. The weather was rather cooling this morning as I head out for Pulau Ubin with the other guides from the Naked Hermit Crabs and my 4 students to Chek Jawa.

The children and parents enjoyed themselves.

Guiding at Pasir Ris Magorve with the Naked Hermit Crabs

The Naked Hermit Crabs are back on the guided walk at Pasir Ris mangrove!
Despite the heavy downpour in the western part of Singapore, it was relatively dry at Pasir Ris Park. Organising my first guided walk at Pasir Ris mangroves for the year, I saw a turnout of about 30 visitors  of various ages. It was heartening to see our past visitors joining us for the same walk again.

It is great to see families bring their children out to experience nature.

Mud lobster sighting and 8 new wild boar piglets at Chek Jawa

Today at the entrance to Chek Jawa, the guides and visitors were greeted with two adult wild boars and 8 piglets born very recently. The piglets are so small and cute!

Wild boars, hornbill and an unusual gathering of fiddler crabs at Chek Jawa

The Naked Hermit Crabs held our last guided walk at Chek Jawa for year 2012 today!

There were a number of interesting sightings at Chek Jawa today.
Upon arrival at the entrance of Chek Jawa, 3 wild boars came out of their foraging activities to meet us.
One of them approached us real close and started sniffing around without any fear.
Wild boar sniffing at me
This can be disturbing as it could lead to unwanted accidents to members of the public if they were to start screaming and acting aggressive towards the wild boar.

Jellyfishy at Chek Jawa with the Naked Hermit Crabs

The Naked Hermit Crabs volunteers had another great guided walk session at Chek Jawa today despite the hot and humid weather, and the threatening approaching storm in the late morning. We had about 40 visitors today with us.

Girl Guides Fun at Chek Jawa Guided Walk

It is the time for the Naked Hermit Crabs' monthly guided walk at Chek Jawa.
Today I have arranged for my school's Girl Guides (student leaders only) to join us for the guided walk since they needed to do recee trip for their upcoming camp in November.

At the Ubin jetty, the captain (Mrs Teo) explains and show the guides about the granite rocks that can still be found near along the Ubin jetty and all the way in to the area in front of Pak Ali's shop.
Explaining about the granite rock next to the Ubin jetty.
The original Malay name of Pulau Ubin was Pulau Batu Jubin, which meant "Island of Granite Stones", because of the many granite quarries available to obtain these stones.

For their recee trip, they had the luxury of taking van rides to and from Chek Jawa. I had fun sharing some of the interesting stories along the journey to the guides as the van drives past the Headman's house, the route to Chek Jawa, the Pulai Tree. I shared about the ostriches which used to be found at the backyard of the Headman's house (I have seen the ostriches myself before they were being relocated). It's so interesting to hear the funny answers the students gave.

Upon arrival, I highlighted the presence of a bee hive in the roof of the Ubin map. Being leaders, the students need to understand their environment well and be on the look out for threats that might harm their group members. They are then given the task of finding out the name of the hut next to the alighting point - Punai Hut.

I proceeded on to show the girls about the rubber tree and explained how the latex from the rubber tree is tapped and collected. Unfortunately, the demonstration setup has been removed from the tree but there were still some traces of dried up latex along the tapping. The rubber tree needs to be tapped and the latex collected early in the morning, before the sun rises. Mrs Teo further elaborates that this is why we hear stories about rubber tappers being eaten up by pythons - probably due to the lack of light, the rubber tappers do not have a clear sight of their environment.
Me, sharing about rubber trees to the guides.

Just nice, it was time to report for the guided walk.

Brief introduction by Ley Kun
At the information kiosk, the crabs (nature guides of the Naked Hermit Crabs) have gathered with the visitors. I called order for the girl guides to assemble and Ley Kun gave a brief welcome and introduction to the girls, followed by a group photo taking session. I had the help of Chay Hoon, who guided the other half of this 22 ladies girl guides troop.

Along the boardwalk, a very friendly dog joined us. According to the NParks staff on duty, this dog comes from the Ubin town center and has been visiting Chek Jawa on a number of occasions. He did mention to me that this dog is expensive. The dog was rather well groomed and quite happy walking around in the mud, sniffing.
Friendly dog
I shared many interesting information with my group - Jejawi tower, Jejawi tree, Nipah palm, mudskippers, sea holly, tree-climbing crabs, mud lobster and its mount, the mangrove trees, marine animals... etc. I had to talk more as I am building up future nature guides. The girls were jotting down notes in their notebooks as they will be conducting the same walk for their Patrol members (Patrol in Girl Guides is similar to groupings, with each group having a leader as assistant leader).
View of the guides from the Jejawi Tower.

At our first sheltered rest stop, I noticed the usual mudskipper is sitting outside its hole. The only difference this time is that its hole is filled with water. During last month's guided walk, Ria saw a pair at the entrance. On closer look at my photo, it looks like a giant mudskipper has taken over the very same hole. I wonder what happened to the usual mudskipper.

What an unusual sight! A golden pupae was found. My group member and I had never seen such shiny pupae before. Chay Hoon saw it too. This is very intriguing and I have yet to identify the ID of this pupae. (Sorry for the poor image. My camera decided not to work its macro function on this.)

At the end of the guided walk, the girls helped to contribute to our guestbook with what they saw/feel about Chek Jawa. (At this moment as I typed this post, I realised some did not get the full story about Chek Jawa.... Nevermind. It was already an information overload journey for them.)

I had a great time guiding my own students, sharing my information with them in the hoping that they will do a good job to their Patrol members. They are a lively and fun group of visitors.

The KC Girl Guides student leaders were given two assignments by me today:
1. Locate the hibiscus plant in the school.
2. Locate the rambutan tree in the school.

As the guided walk ends for the day, and being threatened by the approaching storm, the crabs retreated to the sisters' restaurant for our usual lunch dishes. I don't have photos of the food, just only empty plates and shells.
All cleared.
More photos will be added to this post when I have the links to the photos taken by other nature guides.

Wet day at Chek Jawa Guided Walk

It was a wet day for the Naked Hermit Crabs.
Despite the rain which started early in the morning, about 30 visitors who signed up for the monthly guided walk by the Naked Hermit Crabs turn up and braved the light rain during the walk.

Chek Jawa Guided Walk with Wild Boars, Otters, Hornbills and Snake

It's the school holidays and the families are out to play. The Naked Hermit Crabs had their monthly guided walk at Chek Jawa today. We pushed the walk to the 3rd week for this month because of the school holiday season. Otherwise, our guided walks for Chek Jawa is on the 2nd Saturday of each month.

There were 5 guides for today's walk and we had 70 visitors with us for the walk (yes, I counted... from my photos). We took the group photo in 2 batches since the first group of visitors came early.
Visitors batch 1
Visitors batch 2
Ria and Kok Sheng handled the first batch of visitors separately while Ivan and I took care of the 2nd batch. Ley Kun waited for late comers but there were none.

Hornbills, Wild boars, marine critters and OTTERS at Chek Jawa Shore

Having done guiding at Chek Jawa boardwalk since late 2009, I have never stepped onto the shore before.
Today I got the opportunity to do so thanks to Ley Kun, the Mama Crab of the Naked Hermit Crabs.

Many animals were out and active today at Chek Jawa.
The first animal we encountered were the Wild boars (Sus scrofa) right at the start of the boardwalk.
The piglets still have their watermelon strips on.
Wild boar
They were looking for food for quite sometime here.
Reason: Because of the Oriental pied-hornbills (Anthracoceros albirostris) that were feeding at a tree above.
Find the hornbill.
From the Jejawi tower, we can see the exposed shore of Chek Jawa.
Finally, after so many guided walks at Chek Jawa, I got to see the Oriental whip snake (Ahaetulla prasina) up close. It was hanging from some plant at the plant arch leading to the seagrass lagoon.

There were traces of wild boar digging near the sonneratia tree.
On the shore, preparations have already been done to avoid visitors from trampling all over the place. There were various stations setup to show visitors the marine animals that can be seen on the shore.
There was a Cuthona nudibranch (Cuthona sibogae).
Blue dragon nudibranch (Pteraeolidia ianthina)
Many Garlic bread sea cucumber (Holothuria scabra) were found to show visitors.
Garlic bread sea cucumber
The highlight of the day for me was not the shore walk but Otters!
A pair of otters were spotted on the shore to the right of the pathway leading to "Chek Jawa Rear" beacon. There have been sightings of otters at Chek Jawa and I finally got to see the wild otters at location. Ley Kun and I spent a good 10 minutes admiring them. Many visitors were also delighted to see the otters at that time.
Are they the Smooth coated otter (Lutrogale perspicillata)?

Soon it was time to go and at the hut, we met the wild boars again.
This time the piglets were having their milk break while the older siblings were having a lazy rest.
Milk time!
Lazing around
Back at the Changi Point Ferry Terminal, a very long queue was formed by visitors trying to make their way to Pulau Ubin. Look a the photo to see what I meant.
This is THE bumboat queue.
I wonder what is so special today? Or does this happen every Sunday?

Breakfast with wild boars at Chek Jawa

It's the Naked Hermit Crabs monthly guided walk at Chek Jawa today.
Before I arrived at the Changi Point Ferry Terminal, I check out the noisy trees along the road.

In one of the tree holes, a long-tailed parakeet looks out of its home.

Taking a bumboat from Changi Point Ferry Terminal and then a taxi service from Pulau Ubin, we arrived at Chek Jawa. At the town centre of Pulau Ubin, the van driver stopped in front of the temple to pick some some stuff.

Free guided walk at Pasir Ris Mangroves with the Naked Hermit Crabs

Today is the last session of the Naked Hermit Crabs' April Pasir Ris Mangrove guided walk.
We had about 30 visitors with us today. Many exciting things were seen, including a dead water monitor lizard.

Just before the trip started, Ley Kun found the kapok tree. (Sorry, no pictures from me) When the fruit of the kapok tree explodes, it releases fluffy materials that feels like cotton wool. If I am not wrong, my parents used to buy these fluffy materials from shops to make pillows.

Right at the first bend of the mangrove boardwalk, there were a cluster of garbage bags placed at one corner.
